The Hundred Horse Chestnut

A few steps from our structure you can discover the charm of the Hundred Horse Chestnut, a multi-millennial tree (its age is between 3600 and 4000 years), located in the Etna Park in the Carpineto district. Much studied and visited in recent centuries, its history merges with a legend according to which Queen Giovanna I of Anjou with her retinue of a hundred knights took shelter from a sudden storm right under the imposing foliage of the chestnut tree. On November 20, 2021, during the final evening of the "Tree Art Festival", the Castagno dei Cento Cavalli was proclaimed the winner of the "ITALIAN TREE OF THE YEAR 2021" competition. Arriving among the four finalists, the millennial chestnut tree of Sant'Alfio, in the province of Catania, conquered the public with its 28 meters in height, 52 in trunk circumference and 68 in crown diameter.

Museum of Vine, Wine and Ancient Crafts

Housed in an elegant building in the historic centre, it was born in the late 1990s on the initiative of prof. Rosario Zappalà and the collaboration of the citizens who donated the ancient agricultural tools for the cultivation of the vine and the production of wine and the equipment inherent to the ancient crafts and the rural environment.

Structured on two levels, it also houses a permanent photographic exhibition of the early 1900s grape harvest and an exhibition of wines produced in places that adhere to the National Association of Wine Cities. The exhibition area is animated by the elderly of the day care center on the occasion of the Christmas events organized by the Municipality in collaboration with the Santalfiese Cultural Association.

Mother Church of Sant'Alfio

The small town of Sant'Alfio links its name to the three holy brothers Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino who, according to tradition, stopped in this place before reaching Lentini to suffer martyrdom. The first settlement developed in the early eighteenth century around the mother church, whose foundation dates back to the previous century.

When the church began to prove inadequate to the needs of the growing population it was decided to expand it by incorporating the primitive construction into the new sacred building which was conceived with three naves with a transept under the dome. Dedicated to the three martyred Brother Saints, today the church is raised on a staircase made of black Etna stone like the entire facade.
